Why BPOC

  • New York City spends half of one percent on its parks

  • On average, US cities spend 2.2% on its parks

  • Some cities spend much more--Minneapolis spends 7% of its budget on its parks

  • The lack of spending on parks in New York City is compounded by the size of its budget. It is 5 times larger than the next largest municipal budget

Many Manhattan parks are supported by park conservancies that raise significant amounts of private capital to maintain, improve and program their parks. Examples include Central Park, Riverside Park, Bryant Park, Madison Square Park, the High Line and the Battery. Parks in the outer-boroughs with a few exceptions, most notably Prospect Park, do not have park conservancies that raise private support.
